Grandma Sally’s Family Restaurant has been a fixture in the Western suburbs of Naperville since the late 1970’s. If you are looking for a child-friendly, family-oriented restaurant that falls somewhere between fast food and fine dining, Grandma Sally’s fits the bill.
They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner and offer a wide variety of dining selections featuring many “comfort foods” that will remind you of Sunday dinners at your own grandmother’s house.
When you arrive at Grandma Sally’s, one of the owners is always there to greet you with a smile and will show you to your table or booth. You will quickly be accommodated with a high chair or booster seat, if needed, and a kiddie menu featuring activities and crayons for the kids. Water or coffee will quickly be brought to your table, even before the waitress reaches you. The waitress will greet you with a large basket full of mixed rolls, bread items, and crackers. If you’re really lucky that day, you might even find a blueberry muffin or croissant in your bread basket. The wait staff is very good about checking on your table throughout the meal, and are always quick to bring a needed refill.
Grandma Sally’s offer breakfast at any time of day and their skillets are out of this world. In my personal opinion, this place has the absolute best pancakes around. I will generally order the Gypsy Skillet that comes with two eggs, hash browns, onions, green peppers, two kinds of cheese, and your choice of either pancakes or toast. These skillets are reasonably priced at around $7-$10, and are generally more food than I can eat in one sitting. Take the rest home in a take out container and you’ll have a delicious breakfast the next morning.
Aside from breakfast menu items, diners can order from a very diverse menu featuring everything from burgers, broiled sandwiches, melts, chicken entrees, Greek foods, soups, salads, “slim’n’trim” selections, fish, steaks, combo platters, Italian pastas, hot open faced sandwiches, as well as a variety of dessert and ice cream treats. The children’s menu also comes with several choices such as grilled cheese, chicken, spaghetti, and other favorite choices kids will eat. Although no delivery is available, all items on the menu can be prepared for take out if called in ahead of time.
When choosing burgers and sandwiches, meals can be ordered in either “plain” or “deluxe”. Plain is just the sandwich served with coleslaw and a garnish, usually a cantaloupe slice. Deluxe is a much larger meal option with the sandwich, garnish, bowl of homemade soup, and the choice of french fries, onion rings, coleslaw, cottage cheese, or fresh fruit. I highly recommend the onion rings as they are some of the best around. I also recommend the patty melts, tuna and turkey salad melts, and hot roast beef open faced sandwiches.
Grandma Sally’s Family Restaurant provides a comfortable atmosphere where casual attire is welcome. The portion sizes are very large, and the prices are very reasonable. Even if you come in with an enormous appetite, you will most likely leave with a “to-go” container because they give you so much food. Perfect for leftovers the next day!
