My Perspective On Being A Realtor:

I believe that:

  • Better Information = Better Home = Better Life

In other words, I know that if I can give you more relevant, thought-out, and better information than anyone else, you’ll have what you need to make the best decisions possible to move on to a better home.  And, with a better home, you’ll have a better life.

The fact that I can help you achieve a better life is one of the key reasons people use my services.

Regarding working with sellers:  I grew up thinking I’d be an “ad man” working at a big advertising agency like on TV’s Mad Men.  As it turns out, I am an ad man, but just not at a big, overpriced agency.  Instead, I consider my real estate business to literally be my own advertising agency where I get to concentrate exclusively on advertising people’s homes.

I don’t think many realtors think of themselves this way.  They believe they’re just in real estate.  But, if you’re selling a product that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars (or more), you’re really in the advertising and marketing business.  I believe that this unique advertising-specific mindset is a huge competitive advantage for home sellers in working with me.

Being in real estate also allows me to combine my passions for photography, film making, and audio production, which I use to help advertise and market home listings in a very unique way.

Ultimately, the key reason sellers enlist my help is because I get them what they’re looking for.  And I will do the same for you, too.

Regarding working with buyers:  Think of me as your tour guide not just in seeing homes, but also in navigating the complicated process of buying the most expensive asset you’ll probably ever own.

With everything you need to know to get to a successful purchase, there are a million different ways your dream home can slip through your fingers if you’re not careful.  My buying clients appreciate that I can insulate them from these pitfalls and keep things simple and easy to understand.

 My Professional Background:

Of all the words that people have used to describe working with me, the three I love best are:

  • fun
  • professional
  • real

I like “fun” because life is just too short and something as important as buying/selling a home needs to be an enjoyable experience.

I like “professional” because the buying/selling process is a really, really, really big deal and I’m proud to know that people can rely upon me to get things done accurately and quickly.

I like “real” because I don’t have an act to put on for clients and I’m glad that people typically realize that.  In fact, I’m fine with saying that I may not be the right realtor for you.  However, if you do find me to be a possible fit for what you’re looking for, I’m pretty confident that you’ll really love working with me.

Early in my career, I helped businesses put commercials on major cable television networks like ESPN, CNN, MTV, Discovery, HGTV, and others.  I co-produced the filming of the commercials plus researched and designed the advertising airtime scheduling and strategy.

From there, I was in the recruiting field for nearly a decade.  Just like in real estate, I matched “buyers and sellers” all day, every day.  In this case though, the buying and selling was related to jobs, not homes.  Being a recruiter essentially added 10 years of experience to my real estate buying/selling/negotiating skills because the roles are exactly the same.

The last stop before entering real estate was related to pets.  After being in the corporate world for a long time, I wanted to do something completely different – and a bit more fun.  So, I started a dog running/walking/sitting company called Dogs Love Running!.  I ended up turning this local one-man operation into a national franchise opportunity with franchisees in multiple states.  In fact, it’s still in operation and you can find a Dogs Love Running! location nearest to you.

Strangely enough, my previous three roles are a perfect blend of experience to be in real estate.  They’re the essential elements to be an expert realtor:

  • advertising tactics and strategy
  • expert negotiation
  • match making between buyers and sellers
  • local and national internet marketing

My Personal Story:

I moved to Naperville in 1981 and know the surrounding suburbs inside and out.  I’m married to my great wife, Erica, and we have a couple of cats, a saltwater fish tank, and I’m sure a dog is in our future.  I’m a huge animal lover, don’t eat meat, and am a volunteer for various animal groups/shelters.

I enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle that keeps me busy outside of work.  I’ve completed 3 olympic-distance triathlons, a number of marathons across the country, and regularly participate in other related activities.  I’ve raced radio-controlled models for years and have a racing sponsorship from one of the major vehicle manufacturers (believe it or not, the hobby of radio-controlled modeling is an international, multi-billion dollar industry).

My favorite book is Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand.  The Fountainhead, another Rand novel, is a close second.  Stephen King’s Cujo and Misery round out the top 4.  I’m a sucker for Hollywood sci-fi thrillers, especially those involving some aspect of time travel, like Minority Report, 12 Monkeys, and Looper.

If I couldn’t be a realtor and money was no object, I’d either tour the world as a drummer in a band or tour the world racing something that has wheels and goes really dang fast.  If I didn’t live in the Chicago area, I’d live where it is hot, sunny, sandy, and has lots of ocean water nearby.

My family and friends are extremely important to me.  I believe that if you don’t have those two things as priorities in your life, then you really don’t have that great of a life.
