When Kreger’s closed in January of 2013, Naperville thought it had seen the end of the 120 year old family-owned sausage shop. But just five months later, with the help of his sister, Bill Kreger was back behind the counter…and the grill.
Originally established in 1893, in 1926, Kreger’s Central Foods moved from downtown Naperville to its current location, hidden just east of Washington Street, in Naperville’s Historic District. Following the brief hiatus, Kreger’s Brat & Sausage Haus reopened in May, 2013, continuing the family tradition of making famous homemade bratwurst and sausages.
Customers can bring home freshly prepared bratwurst (varieties include regular and spicy, turkey, chicken, and Italian chicken), and Italian (both hot and mild varieties), Greek, Polish, Hungarian, chorizo, Irish and bulk pork sausages. Susan bakes fresh brat and hamburger buns and cookies and creates a wide selection of salads and slaws every day. And if you’re not in the mood to cook, Bill is behind the grill daily from 11AM until 2PM. In addition to brats with all the fixins, Kreger’s also offers deli sandwiches, made with Boar’s Head lunchmeats.
Recommended: if you like a little bit of sour, try a traditional brat with homemade sauerkraut. The size of the brat will amaze you (you get much more here than at a traditional super market or hot dog stand) and the quality of the fresh baked bun is easily distinguished from the store bough variety.
Kreger’s is an IndieBound Naperville business and works to support local businesses and community relations, such as holding a benefit where proceeds go to The Friends of Steph and the Shining Stars Foundation, both cancer charities.
