There is a little boutique located in downtown Naperville since 2006 known as Lil’ J’s Bohemia: A Grateful Shop that offers shoppers a refreshing change of pace from chain style retail outlets.
This is the kind of locally owned business where the owner is there to greet you as you walk in, where you will hear the Grateful Dead playing softly in the background, and where the aroma of incense fills the air. It’s a place full of retro style clothing that is a flashback from the hippie era that makes you wish you could take a trip back in time.
Lil’ J’s Bohemia is definitely the place to go to satisfy your “inner hippie”.
While the store itself is fairly small, it has a great variety and selection of merchandise. Shoppers will find funky retro style clothing such as long skirts and beautifully tie-dyed pants and shirts.
The store offers a large selection of band tee shirts, featuring such artists of the past as the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and of course, the Grateful Dead. There are also comfortable hoodies featuring these artists, as well as a great selection of music posters featuring the great artists of the sixties.
In addition to the tee shirts and other apparel, Lil’ J’s also carries a nice selection of handbags that are very “hippie” in style, yet still go great with any modern wardrobe. They also stock a fun selection of music themed games featuring the Beatles, the Grateful Dead, and other musicians. You can also find great items such as tapestries, or even a throw for your couch featuring the late Jerry Garcia.
The shop carries Minnetonka Moccasins for the feet, and sells cool scarves and hats to keep you warm in winter while looking fashionable. Lil’ J’s also has a beautiful collection of jewelry featuring semi-precious gems in colors that beautifully coordinate with a lot of the clothing sold there. As you might expect upon entering the shop, the store also carries a full line of incense as well as patchouli oil.
I have noticed this shop from time to time when dining across the street at Giordano’s and decided to pay it a visit one day. I really liked the atmosphere, the set up, the merchandise offered, and the overall vibe of the shop. Another thing that I noticed is that the owner sells some merchandise made by local crafters. As a crafter and Etsy shop owner myself, it was so nice to see a local business owner supporting local artisans.
